The 3 pipe VRF system offers a more flexible system in terms of control and efficiency

A 3 pipe system has the ability to connect to a large amount of mixed indoor units over larger distances

A branch box allows individual systems to be in either HEATING or COOLING...

Each indoor unit can then have total individual settings.

These systems also know as Heat recovery VRF systems, also have the ability to recover heat from one area and pass to another or vice - versa.

Example

Units that cool a production area or server room can pass heat to units requiring heating in an office etc, the heat is recovered...

All systems are totally variable in output and utilise inverter driven compressor and fans.

The two pipe VRF systems offers one or multiple outdoor units serving a large number of indoor units

The types of indoor units can be totally mixed to suit the area application.

The systems can only operate in one mode example HEATING or COOLING

However, the indoor units can have different settings within that mode or not be in operation, at all.

The system will match the required heating or cooling load depending on room demands and number of units in operation.

These systems offer large pipe runs (large seperations between indoor and outdoor units) and are typically used in commercial premises

All systems utilise variable output (inverter) driven compressors and fans...

From design through to commission the most common types of systems covered, are explained below...

Split system Air Conditioning

  • Probably the most popular system installed. These systems comprise of an indoor and outdoor unit attached via small bore interconnecting pipe work and controls
  • The systems are mainly used for single areas requiring heating and cooling.
  • The systems are highly versitile due to the combinations of indoor unit styles, and the flexibility of distances between indoor and outdoor unit locations.
  • All modern AC systems operate on variable heating / cooling outputs to give high efficiencies, all units utilise ozone freindly and low GWP refrigerants

Multi split Air Conditioning

  • Similar to the split system, one outdoor unit can connect to several indoor units via small bore interconnecting pipe work and controls
  • These systems are popular in domestic and small commercial areas where the indoor units can be operated independantely in the same mode (Heating or cooling)
  • Indoor unit styles can be mixed and matched to suit the area served, whilst only requiring one outdoor unit.
  • All modern AC systems operate on variable heating / cooling outputs to give high efficiencies, all units utilise ozone freindly and low GWP refrigerants

VRF Air Conditioning

  • For larger scale premises the VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) can be installed with one or more connected outdoor units serving a large number of indoor units
  • The systems can operate with large amounts of indoor units over larger distances such as multi floor office blocks etc
  • Heat pump VRF systems are basically a larger version of the multisplit systems above and can only operate in the same mode throughout
  • Heat recovery VRF systems have the ability to recover and share heat from one area to another, they can operate in any combination of modes giving total control throughout.
  • Indoor units can be mixed and matched in many differnt styles and types to suit the area aplication.

Close control & Bespoke systems

  • A close control system controls both the temperature and humidity of an area, or areas. Thses are mainily used in specialist environments.
  • Bespoke systems can be intergrated into combined ventilation units to maintain temperatures whilst providing fresh air etc...

 

How Will It Effect An End Users..?
How Will It Effect An End Users..?

Please do not assume that the equipment must be decommissioned and removed immediately if containing HCFC refrigerants...

As an end user of equipment containing HCFC refrigerants, you will have a responsibility to ensure the following...

  • That the equipment is covered by the "F gas" law as explained in the menus above
  • That any additional charges made after Jan 2010 are reclaimed refrigerants only
  • That all work carried out upon the systems are recorded
  • That the equipment is regularly leak tested and recorded

If the equipment is in good condition and good running order, it may pay to have the equipment converter to an alternative refrigerant. This does not suit all systems and can lead to capacity loss or premature failure.

Owners must give careful consideration to replaceing the equipment completely if the equipment is unreliable and, or in poor condition. New refrigerants and equipment are generally more efficient and cost effective to operate than older equipment.

Please note...No stockpiling of any virgin HCFC refrigerants shall be allowed from Jan 2010. reclaimed refrigerants may be used in the short term....

CFC, HCFC or HFC...?

Refrigerants are generally classified into one of the above three substances. Below is a brief explanation of each, to help you understand the differences...

CFC refrigerants

These are substances containing CARBON, FLORINE and CHLORINE chemicals. The CFC refrigerant is now totally banned from use or production within all countries covered by the Montreal Protocol. The CFC refrigerants such as the once popular R12 has the highest ozone depleting rating (1) and is also a green house gas. It is unlikely that many systems exist in operation with this refrigerant...

HCFC refrigerants

These are substances containing HYDROGEN, CARBON, FLORINE and CHLORINE chemicals. The HCFC gases are to be banned from virgin use from Jan 2010. The general phase out shall be complete by 2015 unless the dates are brought forward. The HCFC refrigerants such as the popular R22 has a potential to damage ozone (rating 0.05) and is also a green house gas.There are still many systems utilising these refrigerants...

HFC refrigerants

These are substances containing HYDROGEN, FLORINE and CARBON chemicals. The HFC gases are used extensively in every day RAC systems. There is no current ban upon these gases but responsible use and equipment inspections is mandatory under the "F gas" regulations. The HFC refrigerants have no ozone depletion potential, but do act as a green house gas.

Ozone depletion

Ozone depletion or ODS is the decay of the protecting ozone layer that filters out harmfull UV light. An ozone depleting substance can remain in the stratosphere for long periods, causing holes in the layer and allowing harmful UV rays to reach the earths surface.

Green house effect (Global warming)

The green house effect as the name suggests, relates to the warming of the earths surface temperatures. This upsets the balance in the earths Eco systems. A green house gas has the potential to form a layer of gas in the upper stratosphere. These gases reflect the solar heat bounced off the earths surface back to surface level, rather than out through the stratosphere.The effect causes a rise in temperature as within a greenhouse...
